We’re locating the best “powder rooms” in Canada!

Long line-ups! Out of toilet paper! Doors without locks!

Most Canadians have experienced their own personal restroom frustrations at one time or another. But for the 12 to 18 per cent of Canadians with overactive bladder (OAB), the stress and discomfort associated with using public restrooms can become a common occurrence.

The Powder Room – a unique online community for individuals with OAB – is on a search for Canada's best “powder rooms” through an interactive Cross-Canada Powder Room Map.

Participate by visiting www.powderroom.ca and by rating public restrooms across the country. Restrooms are evaluated on a five-star rating system based on accessibility, line-ups, cleanliness, location and overall decor. The highest-rated restrooms will be awarded the “Powder Room Seal of Approval” this summer – guiding travellers to the best pit-stops just in time for road-trip season.

CTV NEWS Toronto highlights Overactive Bladder

Over 1 in 5 Canadians have bladder problems, but are too embarrassed to ask for help

As part of Incontinence Awareness Month (November) and to promote the Powder Room’s Bladder Care campaign, CTV News aired a segment on Overactive Bladder.  Health reporter Monica Matys spoke with Toronto-based urologist, Dr. Lesley Carr, and a patient at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre.  During the interview, Dr. Carr encouraged Canadians not to be afraid or embarrassed to speak to their family doctor.  “You are not alone,” she said, “this condition is very common.”

If you experience common symptoms of OAB including:

·     Urgency:  The sudden and compelling need to urinate, which is difficult to defer

·     Frequency: The need to urinate more often than usual during the day

·     Nocturia: Waking up at night one or more times to urinate

·     Urge incontinence: The involuntary leakage of urine

Speak to your doctor to help manage these symptoms – simple lifestyle modifications, as well as effective medical treatments, may improve your quality of life.
